Square shades aren’t a perfect fit for every lamp, but they look very cool when they match. Not surprisingly, square shades work best with square bases, although there are exceptions. We call a lampshade “square” when the length and width and are the same. The height is a different matter. We’ve found that square shades usually fit lamps better when the height is somewhat shorter than the length and width. For example, a 10″ square shade seems to fit lamps best when it is about 8″-9″ tall. A perfectly square shade can look a little too “blocky.”
On the other hand, square pendant lamps look better when the height is greater than the length and width. For example, a 10″ square pendant looks more elegant when it is 12″ or taller, than when it is a perfect square.
